A group of scientists and archaeologists travel to an abandoned alien world and try and work out why the aliens left and where they went. As they explore the city, the scientists feel the alien presence more and more strongly and it brings into focus their own feelings and fears.

A 4,000 word SF short story of alien contact.

Completing the Cycle Short Story eBook Mike Lewis

This is a traditional science fiction short story - short, sweet, and to the point with no strange alien names to try and keep straight (yes, that sounds weird, but it is helpful to be able to pronounce names in stories!).

Without having a spoiler, if you think about a short story, due to the limited amount of words, the author has to be able to grab your attention quick and get you involved with the characters and the plot; Mr. Lewis nails it on this front. I was quickly engrossed, and I could imagine a plot line of this short story being turned into a full-length novel: it would be interesting to see how the story plays out.

If you are looking for a quick 5-10 minute read during your lunch break (and I was), this is a good one to grab.

Completing the Cycle Short Story eBook Mike Lewis Reviews

The problem I had with this story was that the complete plot was given in the publishers blurb and so nothing much came as a surprise. I liked the writing style which reminded me, I am not sure why, of the old style science fiction, in fact I looked at the copyright information to make sure it was not a reprint of an older story. I think short stories are the most difficult type to write and would like to read a full length novel by this author to see how he develops characters etc. With this story I also liked the way that the main story was interspersed with an almost parallel story of the disappeared alien civilisation which complemented the main story.
An interesting story that unfolds naturally. Its use of parallel storytelling is excellent. As others have said it is exactly as long as it needs to be.

For most readers I think this will fall at the current average of four stars. For me the overall style and some ambiguous details bump it up. There are pieces of the story I thought could be interpreted different ways, leading me uncertain as to how I feel about the events in the story. I may be reading too much into things, but everything still fit the tale so instead of being a negative it made the story more intriguing.

Whether carefully planned, a happy accident or just a sign of good writing it added considerable depth for me and I've already reread this a few times.

Highly recommended.
This short story took maybe fifteen minutes maximum to read. The writing was fine but the story was just okay. I got it when it was a free download and for that it was fine but for anyone thinking about paying for it I would suggest you just skip it.
Reviewing the free edition

If this is what Mike Lewis can do with a short story I'm looking forward to reading a novel by him. It is written in a very classic SF style, moves along quickly and somehow in the constrained format of the short story manages to tell two very compelling, character-driven tales about the power of the yearning heart that interweave the fates of a human exploration party with the lost aliens of the world they are exploring.
Another reviewer said this was an "old style" story and I agree with that. It's reminicient of the best of classic sci-fi. The author doesn't cram in a lot of unnecessary back story to bulk it up - the story is as long as it needs to be. There was no world-building for the sake of world-building, just tantalizing glimpses of future humans and a historical alien civilization. I was pleasantly surprised by the emotions he was able to get into the story and the parallel story lines were compelling. When you finish reading, you want to know more. I would definitely read a full-length novel by this author.
Completing the Cycle is a very interesting and entertaining story of a group of five scientists who go to the site of the Cataran society in the year 2172, to try to find out why the inhabitants have disappeared and also to catalog information on the Cataran society, such as language and mapping the city buildings and streets. It took the group of five three months to get there.

While there they find something quite different and very puzzling to them, which is the centerpiece and mystery of this story.

I loved this story. It is well written and original and short enough to read when you have a few spare minutes for a break. And it does make you think. This story made me wonder what our capabilities will be in space travel hundreds of years from now.
